Day 1: Journey to your hotel, relax, go for a walk
We collect you from our local Knock airport, or Boyle if you arrive by train or bus, and take you straight to Cromleach Lodge.
Cromleach Lodge Hotel is a beautiful country hotel with one of the most spectacular hotel views in Ireland.
From here there is a curious maze like woodland walk that will take you to Labby Rock, one of the largest ancient megalithic dolmens in Ireland. Nearby, if you continue the walk, is a “fairy ring”, the remaining kerb stone ring of an ancient home or ceremonial place. From the “fairy ring” you can view “Lugh’s Seat”, the remains of an ancient cairn on “The Hill Of The Giants”.
Cromleach Lodge is in the middle of the site of the mythological “Battle Of Moytura” which is fascinating and could have even established the culture of legal system, trade and currency into what is now Western Europe. More fascinating are the mythological character of this battle.
Apart from fascinating local mythology and one of the best views in Ireland, Cromleach Lodge is a hotel that will spoil you with its warm service, extremely ambient and comfortable rooms and some of the best fine dining in Ireland. This hotel is a choice of world leaders and celebrities when they visit our part of Ireland.
Day 2: Carrowkeel Passage Cairns
After a good night’s rest, and invigorating breakfast we will serve our adventure into the beautiful Tibet-scene-like Bricklieve mountains, driving up the winding dirt track road to the easy walking path that will take us to the Carrowkeel Passage Cairns.
It is important to visit these ancient cairns in the morning as their popularity is growing by the year. This is usually a busy place almost every afternoon. Fortunately, so far, we still find that we can usually have the cairns to ourselves until around noon. There is much more freedom here than visiting the controlled Newgrange and Loughcrew ancient cairn sites.
Four of the sixteen or more passage cairns here are still intact and usable. We visit and introduce you to two of them, share their traditions and ceremonies. You may enjoy cuddling up in one of the inner chambers of the cairn of your choice to be left in silence for awhile.
The scenery is also remarkable from here. On a clear day over a third of Ireland can be seen from outside of the cairns. Some travellers prefer to spend their quite time outside amongst the ancient stones than inside them.
If you ever journey on our Litha Midsummer tour we share sunset here. If there is a clear sunset we witness a remarkable lighting of the cairns. One of the cairns has a precise light hole that allows a beam of light to enter the cairn and light up a couple of the stones like a torch. As you can imagine mythology is rich here and we share tales of how these cairns link to Bhride as a swan. This is truly a fascinating and inspiring site for all those who visit here.
Most of our travellers tell us that their visit to Carrowkeel is the most moving experience of their entire tour. We like to introduce you to this place during our first morning with you so that its Cygnus Swan spirit may bless you and carry you on through your entire retreat.
From Carrowkeel Cairns we head back to the small town of Ballymote for lunch.
After lunch there are choices.
You can climb and visit the Cheis Coarran caves in Morrigan’s Mountain, that we pass on the way to lunch. This is a wonderful experience for sunset.
You might prefer a round of golf at the Ballymote golf club below the mountain. Though it is a 9 hole golf course its is challenging.
You might prefer some horse riding around the shores and beaches of Lough Gara Lake
You might prefer to drive on to Markree Castle for lunch, full of legend, and then visit a beautiful holy well.
At about 5:00 pm we return to Cromleach Lodge to allow you plenty of time to rest and freshen up ready for your evening meal
If you stay an extra day, or more, there are these choices …

Horse riding at Lough Gara lake
Exhibitions, shopping, and maybe boat trip at Carrick On Shannon
Round of golf at full size professional beachside Strandhill and Rosses Point golf clubs

Long day tour with lunch at the elegant Ashford Castle, Co. Mayo, through the beautiful Joyce Country and to Brigit’s Garden (about 5 hours of driving and 4 hours of visiting).
