barge types, rates & booking : barges vs cruisers

About all of the barges
Compared to traditional narrowboats these barges are wider to provide more floor space, comfort and extra stability. The greater living space allows for independent carpeted bedrooms, at least one private bathroom, flush toilet with modern sewage disposal, smart modern galley area for easy meal cooking and preparation and adapters for recharging phones, iPods, laptops etc. The provision of radio, cd players and television vary from boat to boat. Interior is woodpanelled and the hull is exceptionally sturdy steel.
Each barge has very effective heating to create a very cozy atmosphere during the low season months. First, there is the wood burning stove that also burns turf and peat briquettes (fuel supplied). Supporting this is a very efficient gas central heating system.
Dutch class barges
Top of the range barges with two en suite double bedrooms and home style lounge with settees. Perfect luxury boat for one or two couples or singles with the convenience of a covered wheelhouse. These barges are steered by wheel rather than by tiller.
Legend & Legend De Luxe class barges
The most popular choice of barges hired. These barges can comfortable accommodate up to 6 adults or 4 adults and 4 children. The barges are traditionally tiller steered. Some folks may think this is a problem if it rains but usually there are many more dry hours than wet ones and you'll appreciate steering in the fresh air of the waterways. Also there is much more relaxation space at the fore, aft and on the roof than on the Dutch barges.
The difference between the Regular and De Luxe boats is generally age. De Luxe boats are the most recently built and have slightly more modern appliances.
Folk class barges

Similar design to Legend barges but is shorter and more intimate. Though two couples or a couple and single, such as a friend or child, can travel with comfort this boat is preferred by most couples wanting to cruise alone. This boat is a perfect choice for couples with dogs.

Hiring Dates & Rates
The hiring period is from Saturday 3:00 pm until the following Saturday at 9:00 am. Sometimes this can be adjusted a little but this is subject to needs of the people needing the barge before and after your hire period.
Training only takes about 30 minutes as barges are easy to drive and are very tough and safe should you make a mistake. No licenses are required, so that says something about the ease and safety of barge navigation. For easiest navigation, minimal locks and best scenery we recommend heading east. Once you set off on Saturday afternoon you will reach the beautiful Lough Garradice with ease. We highly recommend the first night at Swan Island restaurant and marina.
A barge holiday or vacation is very good value as it provides accommodation and transport in one package. The rates below are per boat per week and not per person per week. Two people sharing is very affordable in addition to being a wonderful experience. Four people sharing is unbelievably inexpensive per person.
